When I look at a house or any other constructed living unit I see a rich collective portrait and I approach each subject as I would a person. Homes are one of the strongest standing embodiments of culture that I know of – compounded reflections of people, communities and regions over time – yet they are still facades. Through photography I take on the role of both architect and artist to make portraits of these facades, instilling in them the order of my own design with which I dissect them. These two collections were captured in the two distinct geographies that dominated my life between 2010 and 2014: the Nordic countries and the American city of Worcester, Massachusetts. These are the faces that caught my attention among the thousands that I walked, biked and drove past. In determining which homes to photograph I looked for details that stand out to me: details that speak to a human touch, a collective past and the contrast between regions that I am always conscious of.
